Alex Trebek Recuperating after Heart Attack

Alex Trebek is back home from the hospital following his mild heart attack this past week.

Great to hear that he's doing better. It's also no surprise at all that Alex wants to go back to work when he recuperates. He's had his share of problems like his car accident in 2004, the incident with the burglar last year, and after his first heart attack in 2007, and just like the first time, it hasn't stopped him from showing up back to work to do Jeopardy!. He's a real trooper and one of my personal favorites in the game show world, and I'm happy that he has a continued interest in working.

Wishing him the best and a quick recovery.

Online Pick of the Week (11/27): Jeopardy's 4000th Show

The pick this week is a great look back at one of my favorite game shows of all-time, Jeopardy!. It was nice to see the show get to the 6,000th episode mark this season, but I was disappointed not much was done for the milestone. But there's always this particular pick. This was back in 2002 and celebrated the show's 4,000th episode milestone. Not only was this a great look back at the series finest moments, but it also shows how well Jeopardy! has evolved overtime into a pop culture zeitgeist. You'll see this in the second part.

This retrospective also shows why I still show a great desire to follow the current era as well as the previous ones. The show evolves, like such as doubling the money values of the clues, adding the clue crew, getting an HD set, and going on the road, without alienating the main concept of the game.

Online Pick of the Week (9/18): Celebrity Jeopardy!

This pick is pretty much from a diehard fanatic's point of view. I love Celebrity Jeopardy!, as I've mentioned in the past. But here features one of my all-time favorite famous people, Melissa Joan Hart; who of course is best for her role as Sabrina Spellman on Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

I'm also enjoying Fred Savage on this. The Wonder Years was great, I also loved Working, haven't seen it in a long time, and I wish it'd be back in reruns again. The other celebrity featured is Alicia Witt, who played the daughter on the sitcom Cybill!

Online Pick of the Week (1/29): Jeopardy! (1978 Revival)

It’s not often talked about and has pretty much never been mentioned or aired again on television since its original showing, but between the era of the original version of Jeopardy! (1964-75) and the current one (1984-present), there was a short-lived attempt at a revival, often referred to as The All-New Jeopardy! which aired on NBC from 1978-79.

The original emcee Art Fleming was still there, but what stands out the most as different in this version besides the new set and theme song is the format change. This version had the two lowest scoring contestants eliminated over the course of the two rounds, and there was no Final Jeopardy! to be had. But instead, a round called Super Jeopardy! where the winning contestant had to face the big board alone and get five answers right in a row, 3 strikes, and they’re out. Not a bad twist, but I prefer the traditional game that we all know and have become accustomed to.

The premiere and finale of this show have made their way around video collectors, but this is a fresh episode not often seen, and includes both the opening and closing segments! The All-New Jeopardy!, my online pick of the week!

Online Pick of the Week (12/25): Jeopardy! Rehearsal Games

This is a good pick for any Jeopardy! fan, especially one who wants to see how things are done when it comes to the practice and planning processes of the show. It's a clip montage of several rehearsal games from the first season of the current syndicated version of the show, which was uploaded (and hosted) by the then-contestant coordinator, Mark Richards.

I love how laid back they are with this; especially with the way the contestants are introduced in the opening portion of the clip. It’s always a little weird seeing someone else besides Alex host this show, but this is still good fun, and any glimpse of classic Jeopardy! is worth a look.

Hardcore game show fans will notice Whew! contestant Randy Amasia as one of the practicing players; he would be on Jeopardy! playing real-time in 1986.

Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Season Premieres: Review

Hard to believe we are now starting 27 years of Wheel of Fortune and 26 years of Jeopardy!.

I’ve sounded off on my issues with the current era of Wheel of Fortune and they have not changed. And I still don’t have the desire to watch the show every night anymore. This new free play wedge in place of the free spin sounds rather weird to me. Maybe I’ll get used to it as it goes along.

Jeopardy! however looks just great. Still a great game format-wise after all these years; I've found that it's aging quite nicely. And I am still in love with the new set. Nice new graphics, and I love the new board sound at the beginning. I have voiced my thoughts on the previous set back in March, and they are still the same as before. While I liked the change of podiums in 2006, I am not sad to see it go at all. It was definitely my least favorite set out of all of them. I’ll even take the Sushi Bar/Library looking set any day over it.

I am really excited about the celebrity element this season. Having a celebrity episode once a month may probably sound like a lot to a few people, but in actuality, it is really pretty much the normal length of a celebrity tournament stretched out over the course of the season. I’ve read that some of the celebrities attending so far are Dana Delany and Pat Sajak. I can’t wait to see who the others are!

Online Pick of the Week(9/11): Rock & Roll Jeopardy!

In my excited anticipation for the start of the new season next week on Jeopardy!, this pick involves another spin-off related to the series, Rock & Roll Jeopardy!.

After years of wanting to check out an episode, I found one on YouTube, and I have to say I was rather impressed with it. Jeff Probst does a really nice job hosting. This version does a pretty good job by adding a neat twist… music, to the regular good old format of the answers and question style game play on Jeopardy!. Just goes to show that you can take a tried and true format and make it work to your advantage. I also find myself to be a bit better at this version. Again, pop-culture-ish type material is really my forte. And if you were a music fan, you would have loved the apparent variety of question material.

Really nice adaptation of the series and it’d be nice to see reruns again someday.

Best of 25 Years of Jeopardy! This Week

All this week from September 7th through the 11th, Sony has decided to treat us with a 5 episode selection of what they call “The Best of 25 Years of Jeopardy!”

Here is the rundown:
9/7: Show #1 from 9/10/1984
9/8: Show #3482 from 10/26/1999, which features as Eddie Timanus’ game #5
9/9: Show #4656 from 11/29/2004, Ken Jennings game #74
9/10: Show #4657 from 11/30/2004, Ken Jennings game #75
9/11: Show #4783 from 5/25/2005, The Ultimate Tournament of Champions finale

I was wondering what we’d be seeing this week considering that the reruns of the Teen Tournament and the Tournament of Champions finished last week, and that they usually do not rerun just general shows during the summer on weekdays.

I wish we could see three more episodes older than four years old considering the fact that GSN doesn’t want to air any older seasons anymore. Also three of the selections are also on the DVD set (#1, #4657, #4658; although airing the first show makes sense considering what an obvious milestone it is). But I’m glad they decided to do something a little special and it’s not often an episode from the 1980’s is rerun these days. It’ll be exciting to look back at one of the episodes featuring blind contestant Eddie Timanus.

Online Pick of the Week (7/24): Super Jeopardy!

The pick this week goes to a very special episode of America’s Favorite Answer and Question Game from 1990, Super Jeopardy!.

I’ve really gotten much more into the show than I ever have been for some reason this season. Unlike current episodes of its lead-in Wheel of Fortune these days, I find that I am watching Jeopardy! on much more of a regular basis. Jeopardy!’s evolved over the years as well, adding things like the Clue Crew. But in spite of any additions and changes being made on this show, it’s still much more about the contestants, questions, and answers, and it doesn’t rely itself on a high amount of gimmicks like Wheel often does.

And it’s crazy, because I am not what you would necessarily call good at this game but it’s still easy to get into. I’m not bad at some of the history, and I’m better at geography; but I can’t help but think how well I’d be at this show if I were competing in some sort of, all pop-culture tournament or something more my league. It’s pretty much why I like to call this game “the best game show I suck at.”

Now that season 25 has come to an end, I thought this would be a good time to find something online for at least myself if not other people who may be reading this, that’s somewhat fresh and new to me to bide my time a little bit that is also classic, and I stumbled upon Super Jeopardy!. It is a little odd seeing things like four podiums on set and the players playing for points instead of dollars, but when you get used to those changes it’s really still the same game of answers and questions.

Celebrity Jeopardy!: From Las Vegas!

Tonight, March 10th, marked the premiere of the new Jeopardy! set, and it was also the night featuring one of my favorite things ever in this world, Celebrity Jeopardy!.

I love it every time there is an all-star show. I wouldn’t want to see it daily, but it’s a real treat that I look forward to whenever it happens. I love seeing my favorite celebrities come up with questions to revealed answers, and they look like they’re having as much fun playing as I am watching. Makes me wish Sony would have more DVD releases for this show, not just more with civilian episodes, but another volume with just celebrity episodes. I’m sure they’d sell like hotcakes.

I loved all three but my favorite of the night was none other than Tom Bergeron. He seems to be as good and funny on camera as ever. I also loved how at some points when Aisha Tyler and Elizabeth Perkins kept ringing in before him the face that he had, looking like he’s thinking “Hey, what‘s wrong with my buzzer?“ And after seeing him guest host Millionaire, I ask, please, PLEASE, Mr. Bergeron, PLEASE host another game show.

As far as the new set goes, I love it. I’m wondering what it’ll look like when it’s in the regular studio, but I think it looks great. I love the blues. I love the look of the podiums. I love how much easier it is to tell when someone rings in. Just great. My hats off to the set design people.

When thinking about the previous set, I was never a huge fan of it, but I did think the newer HD podiums added in 2006 helped it out. I could not stand the podiums that came in 2002.

With a new look and the start of the tournament of champions tomorrow, here’s to a new era of Jeopardy! Cheers!

GSN: January Schedule Changes

Beginning the week of January 5th. Changes listed only:

WEEKDAYS:
9:30 am Card Sharks (CBS 1986-89; replaces Tic Tac Dough)
12:00 am Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (ABC 1999-2002; replaces Millionaire, Syndie (2002- Present))
1:00 am Wheel of Fortune (syndie 1994-95 season, replaces That’s The Question)
1:30 am Jeopardy! (syndie 2004-05 season, replaces Camouflage)
2:00 am Family Feud (syndie 2006-present version with O’Hurley, replaces Beat the Clock (CBS 1979-80))
2:30 am Match Game (CBS 1973-79, replaces Now You See It (CBS 1974-75))

WEEKENDS:
10:00 am Blockbusters (NBC 1987, replaces the 1980-82 version)

I’m not really that disappointed about Tic Tac Dough leaving because at least they ran through all the episodes they leased. And I do think Card Sharks with Bob Eubanks does deserve a spot on the weekday schedule, but I’m not liking it too much that they’re starting over with episode 1. That will make it the third time already that they’re in some form rewinding the show back to the beginning after not getting at least half-way through with another cycle of the show.
As much as I prefer Cullen’s Blockbusters over the Bill Rafferty version, Cullen’s version has aired a lot over the past few years and I think it deserves a bit of a break from the schedule. The Rafferty era hasn’t been seen in a while and a weekend timeslot is perfect for it considering the amount of episodes it had.

However, I am disappointed about Beat the Clock and Now You See It leaving. All I wanted to see were 4 more episodes of Beat the Clock from the finale week, and Now You See It would have gotten up to the series finale next month anyway. Couldn’t they have just waited until all the available episodes were shown at least once before pulling both shows, or at least move Now You See It to 2 am?

And what’s replacing these shows at night I find to be pretty disappointing. I was never a big fan of That’s The Question or Camouflage, and I love seeing Wheel of Fortune, but with it and Jeopardy!, seriously, I thought we were through with this repeating of the same episodes of shows a day. I realize that people can’t see/record these shows on GSN during the day, but I like the idea of having a bit of a bigger variety of shows. And the Match Game replacement for Now You See It I also find to be kind of a letdown since it’ll be late ‘74-’75 episodes again. This would have been a great time to get out something like PM or the 1990 version, which we haven’t seen in a while. And I could do without an extra Feud airing.

Wheel and Jeopardy!: Season Premieres

Yesterday marked the season premieres for the current versions of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!. For Wheel of Fortune, it’s the start of the 26th season. It’s the silver 25th for Jeopardy!.

Nothing that significant happened with either show so I’m just going to merge these into one entry.

Wheel of Fortune debuted its new Million Dollar space, it’s basically Bankrupt-Million-Bankrupt, replacing the Bankrupt-$10,000-Bankrupt wedge. The 25th anniversary wedge is also gone, makes sense since the 25th year was last year. It’s also goodbye to the Big Money wedge. I’m kind of mixed on the million dollar element. I don’t like it that much because there’s so much extra stuff on this show now, and I truly don’t think adding something else is necessary. Having so much of the fluff has really turned me off of watching every night. However, there’s the fact that on this show, you really have to work and earn your way towards winning that kind of money, and I do like that. And with the strings attached, we’re probably not going to see one that often. So I do think there’s a positive part to it.

As far as Jeopardy! goes, I do like the silver logo. It’s very appropriate. I also hope we get to see more “looks back” at the show, like one of yesterday’s categories. I like the new main theme music. The Final Jeopardy! one I’m really not a fan of. I just think it’s way too light for this show.

I must remark on one other thing. I recently got a DTV converter box. So it’s really a treat seeing both shows look so crisp. And seeing them in widescreen is a rather theatrical experience.

Remembering legend Merv Griffin; Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy

On August 12, 2007, the world lost a major legend of the entertainment industry, Mervyn Edward Griffin, to us known as Merv Griffin. Merv was a talk show host, game show host, entertainer and raconteur.

One of the things I’ll remember Merv for most fondly is his contribution to the game show industry, specifically the hits that are Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. I remember being very young and watching Wheel everyday with my grandmother and the rest of my family. Learning how to spell with the letters, being amazed by the wheel and its amounts.

On the Saturday after his passing, GSN aired a marathon of Wheel of Fortune episodes. One of them was a very early NBC daytime show, from June 1976 with Chuck Woolery as the host and Susan Stafford as the hostess. I’ve seen several episodes with Chuck under the helm and I must say, what an incredible job he did. He had the perfect amount of energy, had a wonderful sense of humor, and really helped make the contestants feel at ease. Viewers wrote in complaining about how he hugged the contestants after they won a round. He told them he didn’t care. “I’m a hugger, and if you were here, I’d hug you too.” Susan was also there to encourage the contestants and had a really good rapport with Chuck.

Now this is not to say that Pat Sajak does not do a good job on Wheel. He and Vanna White are very enjoyable to watch. And Pat does have a good job of displaying his drier brand of humor. And he does help make the contestants feel at home also.

Speaking of Pat Sajak and Vanna White, GSN also aired Vanna’s very first episode from December of 1982. I love Vanna. She seems to be a real people person who is very down to earth. She made it very easy for America to warm up to her after Susan’s departure. I love how nice she is with the contestants (she even meets with them ahead of time), and her positive attitude.

After the first syndicated episode, it would be the first episode where they went to all-cash in the syndicated era from 1987. Before this was shopping, where after contestants solved their puzzles, they’d go “shopping” for prizes. These would include trips, furniture, cars. And at the end if they didn’t have enough to buy anything else (usually when their amounts were in the
double or single digits), they’d be asked to either put their remaining monies on a gift certificate or have it put on account. The gift certificates were always seemingly to somewhere fancy (i.e. Gucci, Tiffany’s). I never understood the point of that. What could you do with a $12 gift certificate to Gucci? Or a $5 gift certificate to Tiffany's? I’m mixed about the concept of shopping. It doesn’t sound too bad to me, but some of the prizes were God-awful (ceramic Dalmatian anyone?). Yeah, I’ll stick to cash, thank you.

Jeopardy is another show that I’ve grown up with over the years. After getting over my fear of their theme music and electronic sound effects as a very young child, I managed to learn a lot. I learned about geography, some history, and subjects of that nature.

I haven’t had the chance to see many episodes with the original emcee, Art Fleming. But from what I did see, he did do a nice job as host. Very friendly, serious when it came to the game, good when the tension was high. Really cared about the contestants. Everything you could ask for in a host for a show like Jeopardy.

I am much more familiar with current host Alex Trebek. Alex is just a powerhouse at this show. He works really hard, researching the material used for questions. He goes in the office early in the day so he can practice pronouncing the difficult terms so it sounds very smoothly. A friend of mine went to a couple tapings several months ago, and one of the ways he described it was that it was being “run like a well-oiled machine.” And Alex is another example of a great game show host at their absolute finest. He knows when to be serious, and when not to be. This really proves well if you were to find an episode or two of his old NBC show High Rollers. That was one fun show and he was so upbeat and lively. Sometimes people say they don’t care for him that much because he’s too down on Jeopardy. But what they’re probably not realizing is that on Jeopardy, you need to be serious and into the game. Jeopardy is fun in itself, but it’s not as lively as High Rollers.

As for more about Merv, I wish I could have seen more of his talk show. He had so many wonderful guests on over the years, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford, Soupy Sales, Rodney Dangerfield, The Supremes, Tony Randall, Orson Bean, Betty White. The list goes on and on. Real and true legends. Merv was a truly remarkable man. May he rest in peace.
