The ‘Best Drama’ is indeed Supernatural!

Supernatural fans had plenty to be excited about with the People’s Choice Awards ceremony last night. They scored pretty big. Awards for Best Drama and Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series! That’s right, Supernatural won! Whoo-hoo!

But there’s only one problem… the cast wasn’t there to accept the awards in person and the acceptance speeches were done via videotape. The latest development after this aired was found out from Jensen and Jared’s bodyguard that they weren’t invited to the ceremony.

A large number of us fans are obviously upset and disappointed with this revelation, and for good reason. How awkward could it possibly be to have a series win two major awards and no one from the cast be there to accept either? Best Drama’s about as big as you can get. It’d be one thing if it was one actor and they couldn‘t make it. But if the cast is saying they got no invitation, then that’s pretty messed up considering the attention and fierce competition revolved around said awards, especially with twitter being one of the ways to vote and how popular competitor shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Fringe, True Blood and even The Vampire Diaries are. It's also worth noting that The Vampire Diaries cast was invited since they were also nominated.

Supernatural has been a show that often gets little mainstream press and attention. Even on its own network for a number of years the promotion has been rather minimal and half-hearted at best and has only recently started to pick up a little steam. This was really our “Emmy/Red Carpet” type moment where us fans could have had a really lovely way to earn some of that recognition and respect. And even a little better considering this was entirely a fan-driven award. Somebody from the show had to be free to accept these awards in person. It just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to not invite anyone at all from the cast. Who was responsible for making this decision and why on earth did they think it was a good one?

This fiasco aside, I am very happy for the show. When Supernatural is at its best (and it often is, even with some of the missteps in the sixth season), it has proven to be some of the most compelling television drama you could ever watch. I'm on the edge of my seat right now as Sam and Dean are going through the most intense season yet thanks to the Leviathans and them dealing with the losses of their loyal friends.

In the meantime, I’ll look at the bright side. The show won two significant awards. And well, Jensen and Jared weren’t there in person, but they did take their pants off for us. I mean, that accounts for something, right?

I don't get The CW... I really don't.

Sooooo... fans were not happy one bit Thursday when they found out that new mid-season premiere Supernatural and Smallville episodes that were going to air tonight were going to be pushed back a week for reruns of The Vampire Diaries and Nikita. And then we found out their excuse:

"Contrary to rumors, it's not about preemptions. The CW hopes that re-airing the "The Vampire Diaries" in a timeslot that doesn't compete with ratings juggernaut "American Idol" will help to boost total viewership."

This reasoning makes no sense. Idol to me is no excuse. They should have known for months that it'd be competition; hell, Idol has existed for longer than the CW.

Not to mention Supernatural and Smallville have both been up against other popular shows on the other major networks for years (CSI, Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, The Office, Survivor, etc.) and they never got the kind of treatment The Vampire Diaries and Nikita are getting with Idol. Oh, and they'll just be in the SAME EXACT predicament next week, which makes this schedule exercise all the more pointless.

I think the worst thing about it is the little notice. If they made this decision a week or two ago, then I'm sure most people wouldn't have been so pissed. Or if they were, people would have been like "well, this sucks" and then moved on with their day instead of flooding the CW with tweets and phone calls. And people ARE pissed. Twitter exploded when this news came out. I don't venture into fandom often, but today it proves all the more that fandoms of any kind don't like to be toyed with.

I think most networks would not make schedule decisions like this at the last minute. You don't get all your fans' hopes and expectations up with two months' worth of hype and promotion (especially when said promotion is minuscule in comparison to a show like The Vampire Diaries) and randomly decide to make a change for a ridiculous reason like this with just barely over 24 hours' notice. It's certainly not the end of the world, but it IS a poor programming choice.

Smallville has served The WB/CW for 10 years and is in its final season, and Supernatural has been going for 5 years into 6; both have fans worldwide (and if you don't believe me, Google for pics of Supernatural fan conventions in Australia, the new animated series that's being made for Japan, and check out YouTube videos of promotional ads and so forth for the show in places like the UK, Canada, and Australia) and deserve better treatment than this.

But considering this is the same network that canceled Everwood, treated Reba like crap even though it was one of their most successful shows, and gave 7th Heaven an extra season it desperately didn't need after a much hyped original series finale, I'm not surprised.

Oh, and one final note: I would appreciate it in the future when publications report on Supernatural that they would be so kind as to mention that dudes like the show too. Thanks.

SPN: Marathon this Monday!

It looks like some really good times right now for one of my favorite shows ever, Supernatural. Not only has the show just celebrated its landmark 100th episode, but it’s also been renewed for a sixth season! I know a lot of fans like myself were wondering what was going to happen with the show; whether this would be the last season, or what. It’s so nice to get an answer with that. And to make matters even better, there’s a marathon of the show on TNT this Monday! It’s mentioned around the ‘net as a “fan favorites” marathon. It airs from 9:00 am-6:00 pm and we’ll see the following episodes:

9:00 AM - “Tall Tales”
10:00 AM - “Hollywood Babylon”
11:00 AM - “Folsom Prison Blues”
12:00 PM - “Bad Day at Black Rock”
1:00 PM - “Mystery Spot”
2:00 PM - “Monster Movie”
3:00 PM - “Yellow Fever”
4:00 PM - “Criss Angel is a Douchebag”
5:00 PM - “After School Special”
6:00 PM - “The Monster at the End of This Book”

I notice that the last half of the marathon is exclusively comprised of fourth season episodes, which in itself is not a bad thing. Though I personally do have favorite season 1 episodes, like “Hell House.” “Bad Day at Black Rock” is absolutely hysterical. I laughed so hard at some of the bad luck Sam was getting as a result of what happened in the episode. This show is great at adding elements of comedy within a drama. “Monster Movie” is another true goodie, and black-and-white movie lovers would get a real treat out of it. “Yellow Fever” is another funny one with Dean’s constant fear. And “The Monster at the End of This Book” is certainly memorable for all the inside jokes with the show’s fan base.

I have to say one other thing though; while it’s great to see the show get the exposure that I think it deserves, I am a tad disappointed to find out that in a few of the episodes, the music has been changed for syndication. The good thing though is that this is thankfully not an issue with the DVD sets. Music is a focal part of this show, and I’m glad to see that DVD music rights are not a problem. I wish I could say the same for other series.

Be sure to set your DVRs for this; it’s totally a must watch!

SPN: Weekday Mornings on TNT

I can’t believe I forgot to mention this, but this week, TNT has started airing reruns of Supernatural! You can catch it every weekday morning at 10 am. I would probably be more excited about this fact if I didn’t already have all the DVD’s so far. But this is obviously a great way to catch the beginning of the series. And also a way to get a fix of the show until new episodes return on the 21st. This is also a great fit for the show since this network also airs Charmed and Angel.

This is a great show to get into; as I’ve mentioned before, great acting and writing, and the concept with two brothers hunting demons is a lot of fun. It’s sort of like a mini-horror movie every week, and this show along with Smallville really helped me get into the whole sci-fi/ fantasy genre.

Supernatural: Why I'm Not Worried This Week

With this latest upcoming episode, I had thought about coming up with some clever title like “Supernatural gets hot” or something like that for this, but considering who the two leading men on this show are, a title like that would be inaccurate and misleading.

Anyway, as I’m sure every fan knows by now, Paris Hilton is going to guest star this week on Supernatural. Now I can’t stand the sight of this woman. At all. But I am rather calm about this, and now I realize why. As I’ve mentioned in an earlier entry, I may not like everything this show has put out. For instance, I wasn’t a fan of the recasting of Ruby. However, even though I don’t think the show is always perfect, too much good has come out in the past four years. The writing, the acting, the producing, etc. So. Much. Good. And there’s also the fact that the creator, Eric Kripke always seems to want to treat his fans with respect and knows that we aren’t his personal playthings. He seems to listen to pretty much all of our issues. For instance, the majority of fans didn’t like Bela, so she was gone after season 3. And after all, this isn’t the first time he has asked fans for their trust. I’m suddenly reminded of the time just before season 3 started when it was announced that a couple of new recurring people would join the cast. I'll admit, I worried a little. But things turned out rather well. And even if I don’t like a certain episode or a certain twist for any reason, I know that even though that might be the case, I know that the show at least always tries to put on a good show no matter what.

So even though I do not enjoy Paris Hilton one bit, I will at least have trust and faith that the show will at least still be decent. And even if I don’t like the episode, I’ll at least know the powers that be tried. Hell, maybe I’ll even like Paris a little after this. Okay, let’s not push it that far.

Online Pick of the Week (8/21): Supernatural Season 4 Gag Reel

The pick this week comes from my favorite current prime-time shows and one of my top ten favorite shows ever, Supernatural!

Like pretty much every other fan, I am absolutely pumped for season 5, which starts September 10th! And there’s something interesting to point out. What I’ve really noticed is that while I don’t enjoy every little thing that happens on the show, I still love it a lot, and I still have faith in the fact that I’ll like an episode overall when I watch it. And part of that comes from good writing and storytelling, and great acting from Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Jim Beaver, and Misha Collins. It’s really nice to have an emotional attachment to the characters and to have more “good guys” to root for. And what’s more, there have been times where it looks like they would have dropped a serious bomb. For instance, the episode last season with the third brother a lot of fans were worried about, including myself. Hell, the episode was even called “Jump the Shark.” But in the end, that turned out to be one of my favorite episodes of the season. And episodes like “The Monster at the End of This Book” just goes to show that they care about their fans. This was actually one of the shows that helped start my interest in the sci-fi genre. So let’s see, good writing, talented actors, powers that be that care about their fans, and of course, two absolutely GORGEOUS men kicking demon ass? Seriously, what is not to like?

Since it’s about that time of the year again, my pick is the season 4 gag reel! I really love how it seems they have so much fun on the set. Looks like a really great place to work. Knowing this makes me enjoy the show even more. Can’t wait for the season 4 DVD set to come out!

DVD news: Mary Tyler Moore and Supernatural

Here’s news on the Mary Tyler Moore spring release. Now don’t get me wrong, Mary Tyler Moore is my favorite show ever and I am more than happy to see Fox be devoted to releasing the rest of the series and fulfilling the promise they made to us fans several months ago. But I REALLY hope they also release individual season sets as well as possibly releasing a complete series package. There are people who have already bought earlier seasons and shouldn’t have to re-buy seasons of the show they’ve already got in order to get the last three. Come on, Fox, please don’t piss off a bunch of people by not considering other ways to release the show besides one complete series set. And I hope the same doesn’t possibly happen with the final two seasons of The Bob Newhart Show and the rest of Newhart if they are ever released.

Meanwhile, I like the season 4 artwork for Supernatural, or what’s known as the possible artwork. If it is, I’m surprised it leaked so soon considering the latest season is not released until at least September. Castiel has been a big important part of this season so I’m not surprised to see Misha Collins on the cover. And Jensen and Jared are looking good, as usual.

Supernatural: Season 4 Premiere

I really, REALLY enjoyed the season 4 premiere of Supernatural last night.

A lot of the minor things I really loved. I loved how defensive Sam and Bobby were when they first saw Dean. What a touching hug between Sam and Dean. And Bobby splashing holy water on Dean was so funny. Can’t blame them for being protective at first since they fight demons and evil spirits pretty much for a living. There’s also that bit about the iPod in the Impala; of course Dean would hate that.

I am curious about the angle on the angel of the Lord but I am definitely looking forward to seeing how it goes. The mystery element is very intriguing, and will really be worth trying to find out. And I’m definitely glad that the show didn’t waste too much time reviving Dean. Even Jensen jokes that if Dean weren’t to come back, it’d be the Sam Winchester show, so there’d have been really no point to tease the viewers any longer with that in my eyes, so I’m glad they didn’t go that route.

Supernatural is my favorite current series right now and I am really glad this show pretty much doesn’t disappoint at all. I’m always on the edge of my seat. And what’s more, I’m behind on my DVD buying, and I had finally bought season 1 a couple weeks ago. I didn’t begin watching until towards the end of that, so there were plenty of episodes I hadn’t seen yet. I finished with that, and what I noticed is that this show is addictive as it is when seeing it in first run… it’s been the first time in quite a while where it’s like “I cannot miss a single episode of this” with a current show. And with the DVD’s, it was so hard to stop watching. This show is just so addictive, especially with having multiple episodes on hand.
